Our client is one of the largest private investors in the country and have an aim of providing more job opportunities and economic stability throughout the country.

They currently have an opportunity for a Port Operations Manager to oversee company port operations at Buchanan and all aspects of the business, which includes everything from monitoring profit and loss to ensuring that an efficient service is provided for all port clients.

Position details:

Job description / core competencies:

  • Planning financial and other resources around a budgetary framework;
  • Overseeing the port’s activities to ensure efficient, cost-effective service for clients (i.e. iron ore from the mine);
  • Negotiating contracts and service provision with potential clients;
  • Liaising with staff from stake-holding bodies, council departments and commercial organizations;
  • Linking with local community bodies to maintain a positive working relationship with the surrounding geographical area;
  • Adapting services and functions in response to changing commercial requirements and developments in the local community;
  • Leading, directing and monitoring the adherence to operational standards, rules and regulations and health, safety and environment legislation and company standards;
  • Undertaking the strategic business development of the port and its functions, including property development, allocation of resources and equipment and the infrastructure supporting port operations;
  • Taking responsibility for profit and loss of the business units;
  • Overseeing the management and recruitment of staff, such as stevedores;
  • Liaising closely with colleagues in the company or in supplier and/or customer organizations to plan major events, engineering work and other inter-related activities;
  • Leading, directing and monitoring the adherence to operational standards, rules and regulations and health and safety legislation;
  • Undertaking continuous assessment of staff training and managing this process to ensure high and consistent standards of operational competency, as well as providing staff pastoral care and support as required;
  • Participating in audit activities;
  • Work as a person employed in confidential capacity and not to divulge any information to unauthorized person;
  • Work closely with other departments to offer assistance and ensure smooth functioning of company’s operations;
  • Perform any other relevant assignment given by the management;
  • Effectively manage and ensure effective day to day service delivery and continuous improvement against key performance indicators


Qualifications in Port Management/Operations, Maritime Civil Engineering or equivalent experience.
